Alex Vella Gregory is one of the four composers chosen for the project Ħuġġieġa (Bonfire) – a project led by the 12th May Band & Social Club in Ħaż-Żebbuġ. The project, the brainchild of Mro. Hermann Farrugia Frantz, brings together two of the club’s main activities: music & pyrotechnics. The project involves four new works built around the theme of ‘fire’ from four different Maltese composers: Albert Garzia, Veronique Vella, Euchar Gravina, and Alex Vella Gregory. Each will explore different aspects of fireworks. The project also involves several other creatives including Sebastian Saliba (author) and Gerald Agius Ordway (light design).
Vella Gregory’s work is called Ulied il-Beraq (Children of Lightening) for two actors and wind band. It is a dialogue between a father and son, both involved in fireworks. The work is built on a series of interviews the composer carried out with members of the 12th May Fireworks Factory. The work will be premiered on Saturday 16th November. More info on the project can be found here.
