Violin SonataThis Violin Sonata (2006) explores different facets of Maltese identity. It is a three movement work, with each movement bearing a title. The first movement Żifna / Dance is built on exuberant rhythms that embody the quintessentially Mediterranean character of the Maltese. The second movement is Ħemda / Stillness, a movement that presents melodic fragments over a quasi-static accompaniment that evokes the harsh Maltese summer. The sonata is rounded off with a humorous Theme and Variations  on the popular tune ‘Lanċa ġejja u oħra sejra’ / ‘One boat is coming and another one is leaving’.

I – Żifna
II – Ħemda
III – Tema u Varjazzjonijiet

The Violin Sonata was premiered on Tuesday 4th September 2007 at St James Cavalier, Valletta, Malta by violinist Sarah Spiteri with Alex Vella Gregory at the piano.
